Center for Intellectual Property and Competition Law (CIPCO)

Competition Law

Competition law plays a central role in safeguarding competition and the resulting social welfare in the course of digital transformation.

For example, given the importance of interoperability in the area of digital products and services, it is vital that competition law can ensure access to essential technologies, data and interfaces.

In the area of digital platforms, competition law is a key tool in preventing excessive market concentration through network effects and tipping, while safeguarding the positive technical and economic potential of platforms.

As another example, competition law addresses the market use of algorithmic tools and so-called “artificial intelligence”, with a view to preventing competitive hazards such as algorithmic price collusion.

This algorithmic market activity is one focus of CIPCO's activities.
